The case of the mysterious footprints

Not long ago, I came home to find this in my bathtub.

Mysterious Footprints 1

There were doggy paw prints in blue ink. Prints that matched our water dog, Phoebe. Nothing else seemed remiss. I could see no other sign of blue on the mats or the dark laminate.I started a more thorough search, and came up with a half chewed pen. Now it is a well known fact in our household that George, our orange tabby kitten, steals pens. We are diligent enough to put them away, but we must have missed one.

The scenario played out in my mind. George scoring a favorite toy, bops the pen around the house. Phoebe, always interested in what the cats find so attractive, scoops the pen and stars to chew. But how did the prints get in the tub? I can only guess that George took the pen into the tub (toys in the tub are much more fun) and Phoebe followed him in. Why there is no ink elsewhere is still a mystery. As usual, the guilty parties were innocently napping after the fact.

Later, I snapped this photo of the culprits.
